Immersive entertainment in VR is a niche that is challenging to cater to. That is the hard-to-deny present reality.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. There has to be some way to make immersive VR entertainment more accessible, manageable, and scalable.
This is a tale of a crossover between creative production and pioneering XR technology to make a reality-changing experience that questions the boundaries of cinematic immersion in extended reality.
Meet UPScaleXR
Meet Floris Smit from UPScaleXR, our business partner with a passion for storytelling, creative production, and emerging technology. At UPScaleXR, he provides an event logistics and hosting service for immersive artworks at scale. UPScaleXR helps artists deliver their immersive artwork to audiences of 30–100 people as seamlessly and synchronously as possible. How does he accomplish this?
Building the Cinema Remote
This brings us back to 2024, when DashXR and UPScaleXR started a collaborative project to build the Cinema Remote: an XR service platform for efficient distribution and management of immersive video content to multiple headsets simultaneously, based on an early prototype of the XR ScaleKit service.
“Managing and monitoring XR entertainment content simultaneously and remotely at scale.” That was the question for the Cinema Remote project.
Ultimately, the Cinema Remote aims to help UPScaleXR:
- Prepare with zero hassle: Manage XR media content at scale quickly, reliably, and safely.
- Host anywhere: Plan the next event at any venue, with or without internet connectivity.
- Cater seamless sessions: Actively monitor headset health status during and between sessions.
- Orchestrate shared immersion: Synchronize media playback across all headsets. Load, play, pause, or stop them simultaneously at will.

The device overview shows every headset in the room, with its live status, battery, and network.

One press of Play in the dashboard starts the film on every headset in the session.
Proven at festivals
Since the start of our partnership with UPScaleXR, the Cinema Remote has been widely used at events such as the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam (AFFR), Rise of the Rainbow, and the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). It has proven itself as a functional service that streamlines hosting immersive XR entertainment at scale.
Nonetheless, both UPScaleXR and DashXR are actively continuing to develop the service through our steadfast partnership. After all, there are still myriad possibilities waiting to be explored to make immersive XR entertainment even more accessible, manageable, and scalable.
